Daniel Hernandez  /  Immigration

Living under ICE occupation is like living in a war zone.

Story Summary:

Daniel is an immigrant who came to America, settled in Minneapolis, and built a successful business that employs dozens of people. But since the Trump administration flooded his city with thousands of masked ICE agents, his business has taken a hit, and his friends and neighbors fear for their lives.

Daniel used to have 70 employees working in his grocery store; now he has only 12. That’s because, ever since ICE took over, people are afraid to leave their homes, and are cutting back on trips outside their homes. He estimates that as much as 90 percent of Hispanic-owned businesses in his area are shut down.

Instead of backing down, Daniel is doing everything in his power to help his community. He helps immigrants fill out their paperwork, to ensure their families can stay intact. Together with his neighbors, he coordinates grocery deliveries for people who can’t leave their homes. He even lets frightened employees sleep in his store.

Daniel represents the absolute best of America. He is what we aspire toward when we call America a nation of immigrants. Rather than waging war on him and his community, the government should be lending a helping hand. But Daniel is undeterred, and he won’t back down—because he knows his community is depending on him.
