I’m a pastor. ICE attacked me anyway.
Rev. Hannah Kardon is the pastor of United Church of Rogers Park in Chicago. She has joined the peaceful protests against ICE’s Broadview Detention Center there, ministering to fellow protestors and calling for humane treatment for all.
For these actions, she has been attacked by ICE agents and state police officers. She was hit with a wooden club when a line of officers advanced into her while she was standing with her arms raised, praying.
She was also shot with a pepper bullet in her abdomen, which left a huge bruise for weeks. The incident scared her family so much that one of her children said, “Mommy, I don’t want you to protest anymore.”
But Rev. Kardon says she refuses to stop living her faith in action. She says that this is exactly the kind of moment that calls on faith leaders to speak out. And she refuses to be silenced by this administration’s intimidation tactics.
