As a minister, I witnessed ICE’s full brutality.
Rev. Hergert is the minister of the North Shore Unitarian Church outside of Chicago. Since Donald Trump sent federal agents to occupy the city, he has been attending protests at the Broadview detention facility to provide pastoral support. He’s seen ICE attack peaceful protestors, shoot them with “less lethal” rounds, and tear gas them—all for exercising their First Amendment rights.
He co-authored an open letter entitled “Jesus is Being Tear Gassed at Broadview,” which has garnered more then 300 signatures from clergy who are equally horrified by the Trump administration’s actions, and are taking a stand. The letter states: “As Christians, we cannot look away. We must act to stop this evil and witness to the goodness and dignity of all God’s children.”
