Shante and Mark Benfatto  /  Veteran

Trump’s VA cuts are a betrayal to veterans.

Story Summary:

Shante and Mark live in Tennessee. Shante is a veteran who served her country honorably for more than six years. After being discharged, she and her husband benefited from the VA’s Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) program, which helped veterans finance their homes and avoid foreclosure. In 2025, the Trump administration abruptly cancelled the program, and Shante and Mark have been struggling to hold onto their home ever since.

They say they feel betrayed by the administration, which claims to support veterans and put their needs first. Worse, it feels like a double-betrayal now that the administration is spending upwards of $1 billion per day waging war on Iran. As Mark says: “Stop blowing up freaking Iran, man. That that’s costing us hundreds of millions of dollars a day, if not more … You’ve got to take care of your own home first. Land of the free, home of the brave, right? We don’t get treated that way.”

These two Americans represent the best of what our country has to offer. It is shameful and dishonorable that they are being forced to deal with the consequences of having the rug pulled out from under them by an administration that claims to be pro-veteran, but is actually systematically dismantling the exact programs that help veterans thrive.
